A testament to Byzantine engineering, the current structure stands as the third iteration on this site. Its defining feature, a massive central dome resting upon a square base, necessitated the pioneering use of pendentives—triangular segments of a sphere that transition the load downwards to massive corner piers.

The spatial complexity is achieved through a hierarchical cascading of semi-domes and exedrae, expanding the central volume into an elongated nave. This intricate load-bearing system allowed for the insertion of forty windows at the dome's base, creating the illusion of a structure suspended from the heavens.

THE GREATNAVE

The core of the basilica plan is dominated by an unobstructed central space, framed by immense colonnades composed of monolithic porphyry and green marble columns, scavenged from ancient temples across the empire.

UPPERGALLERY

Originally reserved for the Empress and her court, the horseshoe-shaped gallery encircles the nave on three sides. It provides vital structural bracing for the outer walls while offering a privileged vantage point over the liturgical ceremonies below.

EXTERIORFORM

The exterior presents a heavy, almost pragmatic massing of brick and mortar, belying the ethereal lightness of the interior. Over centuries, massive buttresses were added to counter the lateral thrust of the great dome, altering the original silhouette into a complex accretion of supporting structures.
